A Tapestry Exhibit by Mayra Alpizar
Mayra Alpizar’s art work conveys a series of themes denouncing the abuses women have to encounter, and the struggles and resistances they have portrayed, together with a visual work that celebrates the existence and presence of the female body.
Mayra evokes seeming contradictions in her art work. Using the work traditionally assigned to women, sewing and mending, she creates a new artistic imprint. The tapestries here are examples of this new reality, corresponding to the new image of women. The island of Cuba, in turn, is represented in the form of a chair, with the typical image of women transformed into the stark reality of prostitution, exile and disappointment. Her work begs for a compelling conversation on the lives of Cuban women today.
Mayra Alpízar was born 1956 in Matanzas, Cuba. Artist. She works primarily with materials and textiles, exploring gender issues provocatively. She currently resides in Cadiz. Spain.

La obra de Mayra Alpizar, produce un contrasentido. Utilizando las labores, tradicionalmente asignadas a la mujer (coser, poner parches y remendar) produce un nuevo signo artistico. Los tapices que aqui presentamos son exponentes de esa nueva realidad, que se corresponde con la nueva imagen de la mujer.
La isla de Cuba, a su vez, queda representada en forma de una silla tipica donde la imagen de la mujer en su terrible realidad: prostitucion, exilio y desilusion nos convocan a un nuevo discurso sobre la vida de las cubanas.
Mayra Alpízar nacida en Matanzasen 1956, Cuba. Artista plástica. Trabaja fundamentalmente con materiales y técnicas textiles en función de una propuesta de género. Actualmente reside en Cádiz. España.
